Kilkenny v Dublin
John Locke’s GAA, Callan , Kilkenny
Saturday January 26th 2019
Full Time Score : Kilkenny 1.15 (18) v Dublin 0.06 (0.06)

On a very large and soft pitch in Callan Kilkenny and in front of a good crowd of supporters, Wexford born and Mayo native Frank Browne and his backroom team took the Dublin Seniors out for their first game of 2019 as new Management.

The Management team have introduced 12 new players to the squad. Many being players who were Minors last year or got the call up from the Premier Junior team. Orla Gray, Deirdre Johnstone, Sinead Wylde, Evelyn Twomey, Dara Cooke, Alix Buckley, Aoibhe Dillon, Ciara Carolan, Emma Gray, Jessica McClelland, Kerrie Finnegan, Muireann Kelliher

Both teams ran out on to the pitch with no minutes to spare as the warm up’s had been done on another pitch. Captains Roisin baker Dublin and Meighan Farrell Kilkenny went to the middle of the pitch for the coin toss with Referee John Dermody (Westmeath).

Dublin had a great 1st half, hooking, blocking, tracking back, no blade of grass was left uncovered. Ali Maguire (St Vincent’s) the free taker had two wide’s from frees before the nerves were settled in the first 6 minute’s and after that she slotted two frees over the bar.
Her Club mate Aisling Maher (St Vincent’s) scored 2 points from play. All Star nominee Siobhan Kehoe (Naomh Fionnbarra) scored a lovely point from play in the 9th minute and slotted over a free just before the half time whistle blew.

In the first half the Dublin girls were fearless in tackles; they won most of the rucks and 50/50 balls. Emma O’Byrne, Eve O’Brien and debutante Orla Gray were hunting in packs and clearing the line.

In the half back line Dee Johnstone who won an All Ireland medal with the Premier Juniors last year showed class alongside the gifted Vice Captain Aisling Carolan and long striker Grainne Quinn who delivered some great ball into the forwards.

Midfield was the duo of Captain Roisin Baker and Alex Griffin who had a great game.

The half forward line was the hard working Emma Flanagan, the experienced Ali Maguire and Sinead Wylde another debutante for the Seniors.

The forward line was our third starting debuntant of the match Evelyn Twomey, All Star Aisling Maher and the fearless Siobhan kehoe.

Dublin certainly were the better team in the first half and had Kilkenny on their toes.

At half time the score was Kilkenny 0.05 Dublin 0.06

The teams came out for the second half and it was clear from the 1st minute that Kilkenny were not going to let the game continue the way it had gone in the 1st half. Denise Gaule was moved from the forwards and left to roam and she caused trouble for Dublin.
Within the first 7 minutes, Kilkenny had scored 3 points (1F)

Dublin made 3 substitutions in the 2nd half, Aoibhe Dillon for Sinead Wylde (0.13 min) Kerri Finnegan for Emma Flanagan (0.22 min) Niamh Rock for Aisling Maher (30 min)

Dublin’s forwards were starved of ball and moved out to try get some action, thus when the ball did come in there were no Dubs there and Kilkenny who waited patiently just drove the ball back down the field.

The score was now Kilkenny 0.08 to Dublin 0.06
We were to wait 12 minutes before the next score when Danielle Morrissey KK scored a point from a free.
After that Kilkenny basically scored every 3-4 minutes and a sloppy goal from Katie Nolan in the 29th minute took away any dreams Dublin had of pulling back into the game.
Unfortunately no score came Dublin’s way in the 2nd half and the final score was Kilkenny 1.15 v Dublin 0.06

Next up for the Seniors is on Sunday 3rd February when Dublin are at home to Offaly.
