U16A’s continue on their winning ways
The Dublin U16A team continue on their winning ways with a fine win over a gallant Wexford team in a sun drenched O’Toole Park on Sunday.
In near perfect weather conditions both teams served up a feast of quality Camogie in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Wexford were first on the score board with a point from play but Dublin responded quickly with a well taken goal by Kim Hickey and a point from a free by Aoife Mahon. In a fiercely competitive game Wexford hit back with a point and then a goal to pull ahead, a pointed free by Mahon and a point by Laura Quinn after a sizzling run tilted the advantage in Dublin’s favour.
It was tit for tat as Wexford pointed before Quinn got on the score board again; with both sets of backs in tigerish form scores were hard fought for. Dublin were now taking control and added another two points by Mahon and Anna Geraghty to go a point up, Wexford then hit back with three points of their own. Ali Ramsden was solid in goal and cleared off the line to launch another attack which was passed to Hickey who got the last score of the first half to leave the game all square at 1:07 apiece.
Dublin were slow out of the dressing room for the second half but they were quick to score with pointed 45 from Mahon followed by a sweet point from play by Hollyn Kennedy after some great team play. Despite some brave defensive play by Aoife Byrne and Hannah Leddy Wexford tagged on a point, then the Dublin half back line of Jody Couch, Molly Brown and Celine Atancio took control and broke down Wexford’s attacks time after time. Dublin went on a scoring spree with two points from Quinn, a well taken goal from full back Siún Keating and points from Geraghty and Niamh Gannon. After a good save by Georgia Plowman Wexford hit over a point, with Dublin players all over the field putting their bodies on the line this pressure resulted in points for Quinn and Mahon and another goal for Keating. Wexford wouldn’t yield and fired home a goal and a point in quick succession. After some sparkling team play Gaby Couch was fouled, this resulted in another pointed free for Mahon before Gannon picked up a well-placed pass from Olivia Meagher and raced through the centre to drive over another point. The last score of the game came from Hollyn Kennedy after some intense tackling from the Dublin forwards of Katie McDonald and Caitlin Coffey.
At the final whistle the Dublin girls were delighted as they had secured a 3:18 to 2:11 victory over a gallant Wexford team who to their credit battled to the very end.
